Pawn Promotion
"Replacing a pawn that reaches the last rank with a queen, rook, bishop, or knight."
In-Depth Explanation
Promotion happens immediately when a pawn reaches the eighth rank for White or first rank for Black. The new piece acts as part of that same move and may give check or mate. A player may choose any permitted piece regardless of what remains on the board.
