A discovered attack happens when a piece moves out of the way of a long-range piece (bishop, rook, or queen) behind it, suddenly attacking an enemy target. If the revealed attack is a check, it is a discovered check — one of the most powerful tactical themes in chess. Double check (discovered check plus a second check from the moving piece) is especially deadly because only a king move can escape.

Frequently Asked Questions
A double check is a discovered check where the moving piece also checks the king. The only legal reply is a king move.
The piece that moves can be any piece; the piece that reveals the attack must be a bishop, rook, or queen on an open line.
Look for aligned pieces on files, ranks, and diagonals in tactics puzzles. Focus on positions where a piece can move with tempo while uncovering a stronger attacker.
