Checkmate (or mate) is the goal of chess. It occurs when a player's king is under attack (in check) and every possible response fails: the king cannot move to a safe square, the checking piece cannot be captured, and the check cannot be blocked. When checkmate is delivered, the game ends immediately and the player who delivered mate wins. Common beginner mates include Scholar's Mate, back-rank mate, and smothered mate.
